We host Obris events around the world. At this point we have held meet ups in nearly 30 countries. We do so to introduce Obris members and prospective members to investible markets, and to interesting and often exotic locations.

Meet Ups are also an excuse to gather – to spend quality time with other interesting, adventurous and self-made people. You can expect to learn, laugh and be mesmerized by the environments we explore together.

The next Obris Meet Up will be an Exploration Trip to two vibrant and modern cities – Almaty and Tashkent. Almaty is Kazakhstan’s financial hub (and capital until 1997). Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan.

Central Asia<\/strong> – aka the “Stan” republics – consists of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The vast 5.9 million square km region is rich in oil, natural gas and an abundance of mineral resources.<\/p>\n

The growing regional market has a combined GDP of USD $347 billion and a population of 77 million. Combined economic growth for the region is expected to be 5.9% in 2025 based on commodity revenues, infrastructure investment and market-oriented reforms.<\/p>\n

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are the most prosperous countries in Central Asia. Much of the regions’ economic growth is fueled by these two countries.<\/p>\n

Kazakhstan<\/strong> is the wealthiest and most developed of the Stans thanks to its vast reserves of oil and other natural resources that have fueled significant economic growth and a relatively high income per capita compared to other Central Asia countries.<\/p>\n

The country is rich in mineral resources including: uranium, coal, copper, gold, zinc, iron ore, rare earth metals and chromite.<\/p>\n

Credit must also be given to Kazakhstan’s progressive government since the country declared independence from the USSR in December 1991.<\/p>\n

Uzbekistan<\/strong> is a relatively new player in the global market. The resource rich country stagnated under authoritarian rule from 1991 to 2016 when its first autocratic president, Islam Karimov, died.<\/p>\n

Karimov’s successor, and current president of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev has led the country with remarkable and unprecedented structural reforms. As a result, Uzbekistan has experienced significant economic growth, modernization, infrastructure development and improved quality of life for most of its citizens.<\/p>\n

Favorable outcomes to Uzbekistan’s renaissance include significant foreign direct investment, diversification and privatization of industries, modernization of agriculture, and an improved business environment that supports entrepreneurship and business creation.<\/p>\n

Tourism has also become an important market for Uzbekistan – putting a spotlight on the country’s rich cultural heritage of Uzbekistan’s ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Kiva.<\/p>\n

The Program<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are limiting the event to four days. You will want to allocate additional time on both ends to explore Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.<\/p>\n

As this is an “exploration trip” we will not spend much time at the hotels. Expect to be out and about. It is also a mostly informal meet up – our time will include a mix of meetings, good meals and exploring Almaty and Tashkent. There will be no tour bus – we will depend on our feet and taxis.<\/p>\n

Almaty – April 27-28<\/strong>
Plan to arrive by April 26.<\/p>\n

James has built a significant network over the past 30+ years in Kazakhstan. He is eager to introduce you to people who will enhance your experience in Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n

We will hit the ground running on April 27th with a walk around Almaty and a visit to the Shymbulak Ski Resort in the Zailiisky Alatau mountains 30 minutes from Almaty. On the gondola up to the 2200-meter peak, you will see the birthplace of the modern apple – the name Almaty means “place of apples” or “rich with apples.”<\/p>\n

On the 28th we will meet with entrepreneurs, investors, Central Asia’s largest PE and VC funds and the MOST It Hub, Kazakhstan’s premier incubator.<\/p>\n

We recommend that you visit Astana – Kazakhstan’s Capital City. James’ favorite hotel is the St. Regis Astana.<\/p>\n

Tashkent – April 29-30<\/strong>
The plan for Tashkent is similar to Almaty. Guided by local and expatriate entrepreneurs and investors, we will be introduced to Uzbekistan’s potential for investment including private and public sectors.<\/p>\n

You will definitely want to visit the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara after the 30th. The best way to do so is via high-speed trains from Tashkent.<\/p>\n

Important Information<\/strong><\/p>\n

How do I get to Central Asia?<\/span> Almaty is well connected to the world with direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Tashkent is a bit more limited but has ample routes including returning to Almaty to connect to other destinations.<\/p>\n

Are Almaty and Tashkent safe for foreigners?<\/span> Both cities are well-developed and as safe as most cities.<\/p>\n

Do I need a visa?<\/span> Most of us can visit Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 days. Uzbekistan will require an e-visa that can be procured online. Please check with consulates in your country.<\/p>\n

How much will this event cost?<\/span> We are still working out the budget. Anticipate that this exploration meet up will be quite reasonable as most costs will be related to food and local transportation.<\/p>\n
