Malaysia – 25 July 2023
Bespoke investing is a pillar of Obris. To date Obris members have invested in 70+ deals over the past decade. We have had some phenomenal exits from this portfolio.
Our investments span from start-ups to private equity deals in established companies to secondary (pre-IPO) share purchases.
Obris investments also span the world – we implore our members to diversify their portfolios well beyond their home turf. In doing so, we provide investors with a tool box to choose the right deals in the right markets at the right time.
We utilize Obris events to spotlight deals that the Obris team has sourced and vetted. We do the heavy lifting of due diligence which takes the necessary burden off of individual investors. Of course we always recommend that you do your own due diligence before committing to a deal.
At the Malaysia Meet Up we will introduce you to several companies that are ready for outside investment. You will meet with the founders and managers of these companies – to kick the tires and look under the hood to use a common metaphor.
One thing that makes the Malaysia Meet Up unique is that we will visit some of these companies at their offices. Normally, pitching companies come to us. Visiting them will add a higher level of touch than we get from presentations and pitch decks in a conference room.
We highlight a few of the companies you will meet below.
Malaysia Investment Climate
Malaysia has a unique investment climate. It positions itself as ‘truly Asia’ as it competes with neighboring Singapore for regional headquarters space and investments.
Malaysia has no capital gains tax and no tax on income derived outside of Malaysia. The country is modeled as a Dubai of Asia and a gateway to a more ‘moderate’ Islamic world of finance.
You will see first-hand that Kuala Lumpur, the capital, is a global city with international links. It also has a cost of living that is one-third of Singapore and Hong Kong.
In combination, this makes this region an ideal choice for industries in manufacturing and primary industries as well as an excellent place for expatriates to retire or have a second home. We wrote about this last week – if you missed our article entitled Your Plan B: Malaysia, you may read it on the Obris News & Insights page.
Deal Spotlight
Here are a few of the companies that will pitch to Obris in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Angkasa-X recently launched a satellite into orbit. As a ‘Technological-social Inclusion Company,’ Angkasa-X strives to provide Internet Connectivity as a Necessity for the betterment of mankind.
It consists of a group of companies investing in Research & Development, IP creation, components sourcing & testing, assembly, launching and maintaining state-of-the-art Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellites.
By offering an innovative Satellite-as-a-Service (SaaS) to countries in ASEAN, Angkasa-X mission is to provide internet-connectivity to rural areas in Southeast Asia where traditional terrestrial fiber network is limited and therefore improve the standard of living and eradicate poverty for Asian-people living in rural areas.
Angkasa-X plans to raise funds from global capital markets to invest and operate A-SEANLINK LEO Satellite Constellation. It aspires to be a unicorn and the number one go-to company for LEO satellite-based Internet services in ASEAN.
Angkasa in the Malay language means ‘space’.
ANNICA is a fast growing energy group headquartered in Singapore with regional operations in Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Listed on SGX-ST Catalist, ANNICA is actively developing its renewable energy and energy storage assets in Southeast Asia and beyond.
What do we like about Annica? Developing renewable energy led the company back to its roots in oil and gas. Rather than embracing ESG to the peril of pursuing natural resources, Annica embraces their regional expertise in oil and gas while they expand into renewables.
Sealegs strives to produce the world’s best amphibious boats.
This New Zealand based company has operations in Malaysia. Sealegs is revolutionizing the marine industry where they have pioneered 3-wheel drive boats that you can drive from house to the seas or lake.
They boast Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum – the ruler of Dubai – amongst their customers.
Other Sectors
We will also meet companies on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange where we may be presented with strategic opportunities to invest in M&A activities and other unique corporate action activities.
We shall also hear from companies in more traditional sectors such as oil & gas and explore the latest technological innovations in oil palm and rubber plantations.
The Bottom Line
Prepare yourself for hands-on exposure to companies that have potential to add significant capital to your growing wealth.
Whether you are an expert or novice in the sectors we will encounter in Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown, you will be in great company – Obris members have investing expertise in almost any sector you may encounter.
We will have ample opportunity to digest and discuss each of the deals that are presented to us – in the conference room, over meals and while we are exploring Malaysia.
