Auckland, 10 November 2023
Welcome to the latest issue of the Obris Global Investor Newsletter.
Obris events for 2023 are a wrap. We have had a great year! We began in Türkiye and finished in Malaysia. For those who missed our time in Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown, a summary of highlights are below.
Heading toward 2024, the dates are set for our first Meet Up of the year. We are preparing to welcome you to our home city of Auckland, followed by an excursion to the South Island.
Sincerely,
Marvin & James
Save the Date for Auckland
We are pulling out all the stops to bring you the best that New Zealand has to offer. What can you expect?
Investment Deals: We are curating several new opportunities including Sealegs Amphibious Vehicles that we introduced at the Malaysia Meet Up. You will also meet several of our portfolio companies, thriving companies in which many of us have invested.
Education: No Obris event is complete without a focus on developing your investor prowess, living long and living well and other timely topics.
The Crown Team & Office: You have spoken with Darius, Ravinesh, Melinda and others. Let us treat you to a reception at the Crown office where you can get to know the people who keep Marvin and me sane (most of the time). Our team will be available throughout the week.
Dining, Entertainment & Night Life: Late summer to early fall is the perfect time of year – perfect for dining, exploring or just gazing at the spectacular beauty of the City and the surrounding nature – including the Auckland Harbour. We will take you to the best venues to get the most out of your time in Auckland.
Amongst the venues we will visit, we are excited to invite you to The Curator’s Lounge – the culmination of our investment in the Amici Restaurant Group.
Connection: You cannot match the Obris community. Obris brings together fascinating people – yourself included. Meet Ups allow us to expand and deepen relationships with people who get us – our tribe of wealthy, self-made, entrepreneurial, independent thinking freedom seekers who live (or aspire to live) adventurous lives.
A Potential Place to Dwell: The reasons to consider New Zealand are plentiful. You will meet residency and immigration experts who will walk us through why, how and where to consider New Zealand for the future.
Scenery: We live in a beautiful world. Yet, few countries may claim to rival New Zealand for the endless and immense natural beauty. Get ready to explore.
To get you started, we are adding a two day excursion to the South Island – home to endless beaches, mountain peaks, world class wineries and vistas that will take your breath away again and again.
Have we convinced you to come to New Zealand for the Obris Meet Up? Let us know by replying to this message.
Save the date: The New Zealand Meet Up will begin with an evening reception on April 7. We will spend the next three days in Auckland before heading south to explore. Details will follow soon.
Highlights from the Malaysia Meet Up
We design Obris events to create an optimum mix of learning and connecting, while taking in the best of what our host cities offer. I believe that we achieved this in Malaysia. Participant feedback suggests the same.
Highlights
People who know me well know that I am a sucker for a good rooftop bar. I find something special in being able to have deepening conversations over drinks high above the city, and with great vibes.
I love how one of our new members Nathan captured a snapshot of our evening at Vertigo – most of us were either deep in conversation or deep in thought. We were living the vibe of KL with the Petronas Towers as our backdrop.
Special thanks to longstanding Obris member Bob for introducing us to his home city of Georgetown on the Island of Penang. We were given a healthy glimpse of what makes this quiet colonial heritage city attractive to expats and retirees.
Deals
We strive to bring you exceptional deal offerings. Malaysia was no exception. Thanks to OAG, Annica Holdings, Sealegs, Angkasa-X and Favor Autos for pitching us on their companies.
Thanks to Stuart Cairns for an update on Manuka Biosciences – we look forward to a healthy exit in the next 18 months.
Stay tuned as we turn some of the offerings into Obris deals. Several of the opportunities are undergoing Obris’ enhanced due diligence. A few companies need to define what they need before we consider investing. We will keep you posted as we develop the deals.
Prepare to exercise your sealegs in Auckland – David McKee Wright, the founder of amphibious vehicle producer Sealegs, is preparing to host us and demonstrate Sealeg vessels with us aboard.
All the best from the Obris Team
