Most people in this world let circumstances, governments and other people define their destiny – not just long term destiny, but most aspects of their lives and eventual deaths.
The Obris crowd is different. We define our world. We make choices that are best for ourselves and our wellbeing. We look for opportunities. We explore the world. We exploit the world. We enjoy the world.
Among the plethora of resources that Obris provides to members, I think that connection with like-mind, independent successful people is near the top of the list.
We cultivate a community of people who glean from each other – ideas on how we live, how we thrive and how we invest.
We ended the Philippines Meet Up last year with two stand-out sessions on the resort Island of Boracay. There was near consensus that these two sessions were the most valuable content of our week together.
This is after three days in Manila exploring investment opportunities in SE Asia’s fastest growing market.
After breakfast, Marvin and I gathered the group around a big table to share ideas, and to glean from each other. The topic of Day 1 was “How are you growing your wealth?” Day 2 was “How are you growing your health?”
We host similar sessions at every event to draw out the expertise of event participants. Obris members were the experts in these two sessions.
Each person was given the floor. One by one we shared in depth how we are defining our world – growing wealth and health. The ideas that were shared were nothing short of priceless. Some were actionable. Some stimulated discussion and inspiration. I took notes.
I could share my notes, but that would not do justice to what I gleaned – what you may glean. You really have to experience it for yourself.
That is my lead into sharing our plans for Obris events this year. You will have several opportunities to gather around the big table. To share your expertise. And to glean from the real-life successes of other Obris members.

We are altering our standard Meet Up schedule for 2025. Rather than hosting two large events, we will host one large event in Bombay (Mumbai) in November and several smaller gatherings around the world during the year. This will start with Central Asia at the end of April.
Bombay – Early November 2025
To the locals, Mumbai is and always will be Bombay. This thriving and addictive city offers everything – a great business center, bustling night life, amazing food and much to explore. According to our inside experts, there is only one place to stay – The Taj Mahal Palace.
Plan for the first week of November – we are finalizing dates and the program to share with you soon.
Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan – 27-30 April 2025
Most readers of the Global Investor know that I (James) have a long history in Central Asia – 33 years. I own companies in the mining sector and am an active investor in Kazakhstan. I spend significant time there each year – and I like to bring our members and friends to experience this remarkable and unique part of the world.
Care to join me this April – when spring is finally in the air after a long and cold winter?
We will spend two days in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s most beautiful city and its hub for international business. We will meet with entrepreneurs, PE groups and Kazakhstan’s largest VC and tech incubator.
We will also explore Kazakhstan’s largest city – you may be shocked by the phenomenal restaurants, bars and night life. We will also climb high into the Tian Shen mountains – the birthplace of the apple – only 30 minutes from Almaty’s bustling city center.
We are adding a site visit to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, a quickly emerging and increasingly stable market. We will tell you more about Uzbekistan in the coming weeks. I recommend that you visit Samarkand and Bukhara, two ancient cities on the Silk Road.
